  “I want to make a little toast,” Barry announced to the crowded table. “This is an odd mismatched group, but whatever.”

  Lena beamed proudly at her friend. “We’re ready for some toast now, Barry.” She smiled as she talked. After all that had happened, she was grateful they were all still alive.

  Barry returned Lena’s sweet smile. “This is for us. Beating those zombies, becoming friends or better friends, overcoming fears. This is to us… being…” His muddled brain couldn’t find the right words. The mix of Monster Munch and Smirnoff ice had confused his mind.

  Lena clinked her beer with his glass. “This is to us being like Bruce Willis, kick-ass heroes,” she finished, nodding to the friends around the cramped table.

  Their glasses clinked together, and the large group of friends and strangers chattered in half-drunken conversation. The end of the world would come, but the group of heroes was happy to be together, alive and smiling.

  Barry set the glass gently down on the wooden surface. “So, this is it then,” he said softly to Lena. His words were so quiet only the Special Forces agent beside him could hear them.

  “What?” she asked, placing a hand on his shoulder.

  Barry took his time looking from face to face. Even the strangers among the group were happy and kind. He bit his lower lip. He was happier than he had ever been before, even despite the tragedy of what was happening in the world. He turned his head to face Lena, his slightly drunken mind making his thoughts hazy. But no amount of drink could stop him from feeling the way he felt.

  “This is it,” he repeated, reaching his hand to meet hers on his shoulder. “This is home.”
